What To Do If The Diamond Falls Out

Buying diamond jewelry can be a bit of a conundrum. On one hand, you want the diamond to be the centerpiece and display it’s brilliance. On the other hand, that thing is expensive, so it needs something around it that won’t give. So what if you lose it?

My diamond fell out, what do I do?

In the event that the diamond does fall out, the first step is obviously to look for it. Best case scenario is if you’ve been around the house all day and you can just look on the ground (carpet can be hard to find diamonds in though).

When you buy a ring, the next step will generally be to get it insured (whether you add it to your homeowner’s insurance or get it individually insured). That way you’re covered in an event such as this and you don’t have the burden of stress. Engagement rings are not indestructible after all and things can happen. If you are insured, you need to file a claim.

In the (hopefully unlikely) event that you aren’t insured, your next best step would be to contact whoever sold it to you to see if they have any options. Most places will not warranty diamond rings, but they can generally at least point you in the right direction.

My diamond hasn’t fallen out yet but it’s wiggling around

Take it in right now! A diamond should never move around in a setting, so that likely means the setting is worn or bent somewhere. The place you bought it at should be able to tighten it up and repair the setting as needed!

One option that a lot of people choose is to list your ring with your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance company. If that isn’t an option, there are jewelry-specific insurance companies where you can individually insure it.

If budget is too tight, then just get into the habit of regularly checking it. Play with the diamond, see if it moves around at all, inspect the setting and act quickly if anything is out of place. This is a good habit to get into regardless.

Any good jeweler will, upon purchase, provide you with a complimentary appraisal and walk you through how to get your ring insured. These insurance policies go beyond just covering the diamond and they’ll cover you if the ring is stolen, lost or otherwise damaged. An engagement ring is a purchase that needs to be protected, both for financial and sentimental reasons.
