How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Made?

When choosing a lab grown diamond a common question is: how are they made? We’ll explore the process of creating a diamond in a lab as well as how long it takes.

How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Created?

The process in the lab is actually extremely similar to how diamonds are made naturally. There are two methods that labs use to create diamonds, High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

HPHT’s method uses the belt press, the cubic press, and the split sphere (BARS) press. This makes an environment of extreme pressure approximately 1.5 million pounds per square inch and a temperature of 1500 degrees celsius to help the growth of the diamond seed.

CVD’s method crystallizes a tiny diamond seed by warming a chamber up to 800 degrees celsius which causes a carbon gas mixture to fill the chamber. Then, the gas mixture is ionized and attaches to the diamond seed resulting in growth.

What Is The Timeline?

The timeline for natural grown diamonds can take up to 3.3 billion years. So in comparison lab grown diamonds are made so much faster.

HPHT grown diamonds can be formed in as little as two weeks, however timelines can vary depending on size. CVD grown diamonds take about a month to complete a 1ct. It is a longer process because the diamond is grown in layers at a slower rate.

How Much Is A Lab Grown Diamond?

A lab grown diamond is usually a quarter of the price of a natural diamond. They continuously become cheaper as the science improves and more labs begin to grow them. The reason the cost is lower is because the cost of growing a diamond in a lab is less than the cost of mining a natural diamond, also take into account that lab grown diamonds are not rare in comparison to natural diamonds formed by the earth.

Something to keep in mind is if you are looking to resell or trade in your lab diamond in the future it will not maintain its value as a natural diamond would. Regardless, enjoy the process of choosing your diamond and take your time to decide if a lab grown diamond is right for you.
