What is a Hidden Halo Engagement Ring?

We believe that every engagement ring should be meticulously crafted but also stunning and unique, just like its bride. When you’re designing a ring meant to last a lifetime, attention to detail is paramount, from carefully choosing the perfect diamond to deciding on a complementary setting. A hidden halo ring provides a distinctive and special detail that makes your ring truly exquisite.

Let’s learn more about this beautiful and trending design and see if it might be the perfect fit for you.

What is a Hidden Halo Engagement Ring?

A hidden halo engagement ring, also commonly referred to as an under halo setting, is an innovative and distinctive take on the classic halo design. A hidden halo setting features a diamond or other gemstone halo located just under the center stone; it doesn’t frame the center stone like a standard halo setting does, but rather it sits beneath, like a base for the center stone.

Although similar in theory, both settings yield very different results. Viewed from the top, a hidden halo engagement ring looks just like a striking solitaire with the diamond/main gemstone taking center stage, but from the side, this hidden halo detail dials up the sparkle factor. This is a great option for someone who wants a little extra detail on their ring, but doesn’t want to distract from the natural beauty of the center stone.

Halos are typically done in pavé, or micropavé. Pronounced pah-veh from the French word for “paved” you’ll see smaller diamonds or gemstones fitted into the halo and/or band, just as cobblestones are used to pave a road. Pavé refers to any size stones that are set in the halo or band; micropavé requires all stones to be the same size and are generally smaller in weight. The term “micro” refers to the microscope that jewelers use to cut and place these stones.

Why Choose a Hidden Halo Setting for Your Ring?

Because hidden halos don’t actually surround the top of the diamond or main gemstone, you can pair this setting with any size and shape stone. Whether you love the look of an oval diamond or have your heart set on a princess cut blue sapphire, there’s a hidden halo for you! This particular setting also allows room to add diamonds and gemstones to the band without cluttering the center stone. Settings can be a single or double halo depending on the amount of detail and sparkle you desire.

Not only are they gorgeous, but much like traditional halo engagement rings, hidden halos can make your center stone appear bigger by tricking the eye into viewing the extra bit of sparkle as part of your center diamond/stone, so a smaller carat centerpiece diamond for example can potentially have a lot more bang for its buck.

Unlike traditional halos, which can sometimes take away from the overall silhouette of your ring, hidden halos add something special to your ring without drastically changing the shape of your setting. The hidden halo setting also gives you the opportunity to mix metals without overwhelming the design. As with many engagement ring settings, hidden halos vary in style, shape, and color, so you can find one that perfectly fits your vision.

It’s no secret that hidden halos have become one of the most popular styles of engagement rings in recent years. Who doesn’t love a ring of sparkles surrounding their center stone?
