Devon & Katie: Romance Abroad

From the air to the sea and everywhere in between, these two discuss how a simple plane ride can turn into something much better.

Devon's Perspective

How did the two of you meet?

Katie and I met while studying abroad in Belize during college. We both went to the same college, but had never met each other before the trip. We ended up being seated next to each other on the plane ride down there and talked the entire time. We ended up in classes together when we got back from the trip and were able to grow closer and closer to each other throughout school.

When did you know she was the one?

I knew she was the one pretty early into our relationship. She had met my parents a couple of times by now and she definitely made a great impression on them. It really didn’t take long for them to start telling me “don’t screw this one up Devon”. Hearing it from my parents just solidified that she was definitely the one.

How did the proposal go down?

The proposal was actually pretty simple for how nervous/excited I was. We went home to visit our families for the 4th of July week and that is when I decided that I will do the proposal.

We were at my family’s cottage on Lake Wisconsin. I took Katie down to the end of the dock and asked my mom to take a picture of us (she was the only one that knew about the proposal). After a couple of pictures I stopped everything and asked for one more, at that point I got down and asked her to marry me.

She did say yes, but it started with a “what are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing?….Of course I will.”

Tell us about the ring?

The ring was absolutely perfect. There has never been a point before seeing this ring that Katie ever said something was perfect. Kaeleigh did an amazing job helping me pick it out and designing this ring. I was able tell her my budget and show her what I wanted and she put together a ring that changed my life for the better.

Katie's Perspective

How did the two of you meet?

We were both headed to study abroad in Belize, and not knowing each other before…we were sat next to each other on the plane.

When did you know he was the one?

I will probably get in trouble for this, but I don’t know that there was a specific moment. There were tons of little moments that add up to knowing my person. His personality is a big one. He is the most selfless, kind person I’ve ever met. The kind of heart I honestly didn’t think existed.

It doesn’t matter if you just met him, he will treat you like one of his close friends and instantly care about you. My friends are like my family, so because of this, they instantly loved him and instantly considered him part of the gang. That was a moment for sure.

His ability to help me through struggles he may not understand himself without a blink of an eye. The way it is so natural to him to always try and put a smile on my face, ease my mind, and do anything it takes to make me happy. He really is a one of a kind human, and not to mention he is just as weird and goofy as I am.

We are always laughing. I just think back on all these things, and all my favorite things about him, and how he continues to surprise me with presents or his hidden car karaoke talents(Singing every word to Destiny Child’s Say my Name or Tupac’s California Love). How he comforts and reassures me when I worry (which is all the time for me and literally never for him). How he always gets rid of any self doubt I have and just makes me feel so good about my self.

He’s so funny and weird, and jokes with my family and friends, and loves them like his own. It’s hard to pick just one moment, because there are so many perfect and perfect-for-me things about him that have changed my life so much for the better. I can’t just pick one moment, because those moments that tell me he’s the one are still happening every single day.

How did the proposal go down?

We were back home in Wisconsin for the week of 4th of July. His parents have a place on Lake Wisconsin. After a day of water, boating, and hanging out, he asked if I would want to take a picture on the pier so he could have a new profile picture.

We went out on the pier with our puppy, his mom took a few pics, and then Devon says “Okay, one more” and he gets down in front of me and proposes! I was in shock and after saying “what are you doing” and “oh my god. shut up” a few times, I obviously said YES!

Tell us about the ring?

First word that comes to mind is ‘perfect’. And I mean it. It has a cushion cut center diamond, surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds. The band is a swirl of diamonds. It is a combination of everything I wanted.
